Home Made Laundry Detergent

Some things stay on my "want to try to make" list way too long. Laundry detergent was on that list...for a good year.  I finally crossed it off  this week! I think the lack of good grocery deals helped take it off the list. When I learned I actually needed to pay money for laundry detergent in Pittsburgh, I knew I needed to take action fast!

I found a really simple recipe & purchased my ingredients.

1 cup grated bar soap
1/2 cup borax
1/2 cup washing soda (thank you Ace for carrying this product!)

I placed everything into our vita-mix  This blender was one of our best purchases EVER. We use her for something almost everyday. If you're not blessed with a vita-mix in your home (1) I feel sorry for you (2) just use your food processor.  Hopefully you know how to work yours, unlike me.

Then, I quadrupled the recipe and poured everything into my  detergent canister.  I knew I wouldn't use my home made laundry detergent if it was in an ugly container...I'm strange like that.

It's the same reason I need all of my baking supplies to be in glass containers too.

And my pasta....

I have plans of experimenting with a few detergent recipes.  I typically buy liquid detergent, but wanted to store my detergent in a cute glass container, so I opted for the powdered recipe. Next time, I'll be buying all natural soap.  We're really trying to go completely all-natural around here.

When washing your clothes, add 2-3 Tbsp home made detergent with 1/2 cup borax to warm or hot water before adding your clothing to each load.

I'm a little sad that home made detergent does not make tons of  bubbles like the store bought kind does, but I can take less bubbles for a fraction of the cost...although, I really, really miss the bubbles.

I love your blog! I found you through moneysavingmom.com

I make my own laundry detergent too! Mine is a little cheaper to make and I thought I would share it with you since you are so frugal.
**1 bar of soap (Either Ivory, Pure & Natural, Fels-Naptha, or Zote)
**1 cup of Borax
**1 cup of Washing Soda (some people use Baking Soda & get good results, but I have heard Washing Soda is best)

My recipe is cheaper for 3 reasons: 1. It doesn't need 1/2 cup of borax per load 2. I use only 1-2 tablespoons of the mixture per load instead of your 3-4 tablespoon suggestion (Even for our extra large loads) 3. I can wash my clothes with cold water

I will be able to make it even cheaper next time because I read that I can use 1/2 the amount of soap and it should still work the same.

I love homemade detergent! I have been using it for several months now. It works VERY well. It gets all kinds of baby messes cleaned and it cleans my husband's dirty clothes (he owns his own outdoor service company and he works outside all day. He comes home quite grimy!)
I feel like the above recipe works the same or better than the name brand laundry soap I used to use.

Tip:

I grate the soap with a cheese grater. I use the small holes not the bigger ones to grate, otherwise it won't dissolve thoroughly in cold water. I know you have a vitamix, but some of your readers may be interested to know about using a cheese grater instead.
